The Troy women’s golf team failed to claim itsr third conference title over the weekend, placing second only to Texas State in the Sun Belt Championships.
The tournament, which featured nine Sun Belt teams, was held on the Raven Golf Course in Miramar, Florida, April 17-19.
Despite being favorites to win the tournament, head coach Bart Barnes said that his team went into the tournament the same way they do with any other one.
“You can’t take the past championships away,” he said. “We are not going into it with a defending mentality or anything of that nature. For us, we just want to put our best foot forward and see how the results work out.
“We have been playing with a lot of confidence lately. The ladies have played aggressively, controlled but aggressive, and that has led to a lot of birdies.
When you are making a lot of birdies, and you can eliminate some of those mistakes, you are going to have some really nice rounds and we have been able to do that.”
The Trojans started off well, ending the first day of the event in first place. Freshman Bianca Lohbauer shot a 2-over 73 with a birdie and three bogeys and sat tied for first place with an athlete from Georgia State.
Juniors Gabi Oubre’ and Becca Horner were tied for sixth place, just two shots behind.
As a team, Troy went 16-over 300 on the par-71, 6,000-plus acre course. By the end of the day, they were up one shot over Texas State, with Little Rock trailing nine shots behind in third place.
The women fired 10-over 300 in the second round on Monday, falling back to second place behind Texas State. Though Troy entered the second round with a one-shot lead, things looked bleak for the next day with Texas State carrying a 12-shot advantage into the final round.
At this point, Lohbauer was tied in fifth place individually.
While the Trojans put up a good fight, they ultimately finished the tournament in second. Troy shot 304 in Tuesday’s final round, while Texas State shot 297, just seven shots ahead for the day.
The final results for the top three teams were Texas Sate with 895 (43), Troy with 914 (62) and Little Rock 920 (68).
On Monday night following play, three Troy golfers were honored with All-Sun Belt women’s golf awards. Junior Fatima Cano was named to the first team, while Lohbauer and Oubre’ were named to the second team.
